Rough study

Ok so this is a really quick study to get an idea of shape, shade and the use of colour. It feels kinder faded/washed out at the moment, and of course very rough. Also I feel the colour is a bit bright.

Last Minute thing...

Well I've been busy with current group project and dissertation proposal work that hadn't had a lot of time to think of what to do. Had some look at some landscape concept art scenes but could decide on which on to pick. So decided that I wanted to try and do a study of this piece by Marcus Lindergren, a 19 year old swedish concept art student.

'Three Red Coats by M. Lindergren, 2010'

I really like the rough style he has. Also since I wanted to get into clothing I wanted see how long it would take to do these coats. So not to coup going try doing them as either WWII winter Russians or Germans.

Female form - WiP stopping point

I'm going leave it here for now till I get some feedback, I feel the anatomy is off and don't really know where I want go from here on tidying it up and making what edges sharper, etc.

Female form - Progress 1

Ok so little progress from last time, just trying to get the lighting right. Was having trouble with the upper chest area, I think it alright now though.

I then decided to resize it to get the legs in, and warped it a little bit. Got  the legs and feet in, took sometime wanted more unique legs to Daarken and also I couldn't get the feet right the first three attempts.

But then the feet end up being pretty large, so warped it again.

Female form - Starting rough

Firstly I've fixed my upload problem, had to repair my disk. So I can now upload images full size, with out jumping through imageshack hoops, etc.

Any way here is the starting rough form, I'm trying to break away from Daarkens starting/final painting. It still is kinder his pose but been  try and change it to my liking.

Feeling going have problem with hands + wrist at moment and then fitting "Dem legs thighs!" on to the page, so may rescale it later.

NightCrawler - Final

Not really happy with my final out come, something feels missing also its a bit too blue for me. The background that suppose to be a room corner just gets lost eventually... Meh? I also tried doing a sort of freshly just teleport in thing, with the purple smoke, but it just looked terrible I'll probably end up showing you Steve.

NightCrawler - Awful sketches

Tried to do some sketches but could get the pose and suff positioned the way I wanted it so gave up in the end, was going do a couple more but just can't be asked at moment with everything else. I have a rough more simple idea in my head now, so I'm going do a Daarken and just go for it. I know you like development steve but... I just can't at moment. So I'm just going go for it, I'll make sure to make a progress of it though.

NightCrawler - Setup and Technique

Ok I'm going try an do a Bobby Chiu's set up style with the large canvas, border, ruler lines and reference images. But still use Daarken's general technique, since I enjoyed that more.

Also before I get started hopefully steve will be able to help me again.
While I was doing bobby's artist study, while I was drawing/paint and I want to pass a rule line my brush would but the line would follow up the ruler, I think it's a setting I had on when we were doing perspective drawing in the first year, not sure how to disable it now.

Setup:

Example of my issue:

NightCrawler - Moodboard

I have an idea already of an close up of night crawler high up on a city skyscraper, with the viewer looking down on him and the streets below. Yes, he is looking up at the view and most probably going be grinning. I have a feeling though Steves most likely not going to like this pose though, considering my halloween brief, I can hear it now "what is he looking at?".

So going try out some silhouette poses to start with.

Think it will be good to have the colour palette as Blue > Purple > Orange (NC skin > Teleportation smoke/dark tones in skin and clothing > orange glow of street lights below.)

Also blue and orange and complementary colours, but its going to be a bit odd since orange is a warm colour and always want to be drawn to the front and usually the viewer is drawn to the warm colours first, so going make sure to either dim it down or make it bit more saturated than the blue.
But then again the glowing eyes (like in my Moodboard below) may draw the viewers attention to the eyes and face first anyway.

Artist Study (ii) - Final and Progress

I really enjoyed doing this piece these brushes and process was really fun for me, also the whole not zooming in and not concentrating on the details really help managed to work pretty fast on this. Sorry I didn't do the whole thing, just felt only going up to this stage was adequate enough. May come back to this and do the finishing touches at a later date.

Artist's Original.

Artist Study (ii) - final additions to sketch and blocking in colour

I'm not going bother doing anymore these constant updates now till I get it to a decent stage... ro even just finished stage. So I've got the arm in now and some detail and have started putting on basic colour an overlay level.

Artist Study (II) - Starting sketch (I)

Ok heres the sketch now with the adjustments and some semi built up detail. Need to get the other arm in.

Artist Study (II) - Starting sketch (Before adjustments)

Ok heres the sketch before I go into too much detail, also need to do the part where he moves the head up. There something odd with how I do these... I some how manage to make the head face the viewer more. Where in the original it looking of to the left... need to rework that then.

*Updated Image* (without retarded arm, and refocused eyes)

Artist Study (I) - Final Study

Yeah... I'm really not happy with the outcome, so much is off, mainly the colours, so much of it is too soft still, The critters aren't same as the original. Also I just ended up rush it closer to the end so yeah. Least I learnt what different some layer setting do now, how effective flow and opacity is... yeah. : /

Artist Study (I) - Progress... but bad

Ok decide to share my progress, so far. The canvas is expanded by the way, to allow me to go off of it, will be cropped later. I'm really not happy with this as it turning out, the colours are ending up way lighter than the original piece and also everything has a really soft edge even though most of this is with hardness at 100%, might be the flow effecting it though. Yeah I'm not happy with it though, also the background is way off.

Artist Study (I) - Starting (final) sketch

Ok started my starting study sketch, decided to go with the left hand side section with the squirtle looking critter in the scene. Also I'm trying to work like artist does with the separate window but every time I zoom in on the main one it resizes the window and covers up my smaller windows. I'm guess i't because it a different interface on Macs, making it full screen just hides the other tabs/windows all together. Any suggestion would be grateful.

Artist Study (I) - Artist sketch process

My starting sketch for the artist copy is kinder more developed than his original sketch... oh well.

Developed further...

Colour for critters and the fake flowers..

Developed even further, also added in a slight brown layer to mimik his sketch paper...

Cropped...

Cropped without brown layer...

I don't think I was able to 100% duplicate his process, but it is quiet a good process to work with to develop the basic sketch.

Final, Progress... and all dat Jazz!

Ok so got a few images here starting off with the rough sketch I did, followed by the whole progress I took, then 3 version of my final, 1st on is basic, 2nd is with a couple more decals, 3rd has a rust texture added and last image is quick homage to  the 'Rock'em Sock'em Robots'.

Robot Moodboard

Ok so my first idea was to do a slim butler robot like a Jeeves or Alfred style butler... but as a robot. Then I decided to keep with british angle and at same time play on the 'Rock & Sock'em Robots' and the 'Real Steel' concepts. By doing a Pugilist Robot, slim but still with a bruiser/burly feature and main focusing on british gentlemen idea... Moustache.

Surreal Moodboard

My idea so far is a crab with a castle on top of it at moment, needs some more bizarre elements to it though. Would be nice to get some advice on this one Steve.

Surrealism

Surrealism is my favourite art movement... of all time. I just love the use of colour, the detail with in the paintings and the bizarre and wacky nature of the scene.

This is my favourite surrealist paint called 'Landscape from a Dream' by Paul Nash.
I've loved this piece as soon as I saw it in the Tate modern, while I was still on foundation.
Unlike most surrealist paintings it has more of a messy watercolour/pastel style to it, more simplistic compared to the usual highly detailed surrealist paintings.

Paul Nash (1936-8) Landscape from a Dream
[Painting] Oil on Canvas.

Hmmm... maybe its time to revisit my Six form days, I think I'll start with my first year Surrealist piece.

Ta! Da... Wait... oh god burn it. Burn it with fire. Yeah we had to pick a place, an animal, and some objects from "hat"s. I got Disc, Tap, Ice cream, rocking horse, cassette, bacon, jellyfish and mousetrap. Well you can probably clearly see those.

What about my final year piece for six form?... hmmm.

Meh... I guess it was slightly better.
